Kenya Academy of Sports Conference

The Kenya Academy of Sports KAS International Conference was held in Nairobi, Kenya School of Monetary Studies from 12th-14th June 2023. The conference themed ‘Transforming the Sports Ecosystem for Socio-economic Development’ has brought together experts in sports from all over the world.

The conference was specifically important to chess as many stakeholders of education were invited and chess is one of most discussed part of content to be introduced in the new competency based curriculum.

One of the speakers was WIM Anzel Laubscher, a councillor in FIDE Chess in Education Commission. She has delivered one of the most electrifying presentations about 21st Century skills and why chess plays a critical role in developing future competencies. The subsequent speakers including education experts could not help but refer to chess as one of the important potential tools in education.

Dr. Lydia Mucheru,KICD director has acknowledged that chess has been made a subject in grade 10 and above. He called on KAS, TSC and Ministry of Education to assist preparing teachers for this stage.

The members of Chess Kenya who attended the conference include Secretary General John Mukabi, Assistant Secretary General Aurelia Chumo, Secretary for Gender and Special Needs Rodah Olisa, Head of Events committee Moses Andiwoh, Kiambu County regional Coordinator Moses Kwereba, and President of Chess Kenya Benard Wanjala.

In the sidelines, Chess Kenya had a long discussion with KAS and Chess in Education Commission representative Anzel Laubscher on future plans of hosting a Chess in Schools seminar later in the year to train teachers for the FIDE School Instructor title. More details will be communicated.
