Learning in Play: A Guide to Chess Teaching in Schools
by Charles Muora Netto
It is with immense joy and satisfaction that we announce the release of our new book, the fruit of a dedicated and passionate partnership between myself and my wife, Sandra Maria Guisso. Today we mark the culmination of over two decades dedicated to the game of chess and its profound influence on education.
This book is not merely a work about chess, but a testament to our belief in the transformative power of this ancient game. Throughout our journey, both in early childhood education and higher education, chess has consistently been a tool, shaping minds and reinforcing values.
Our aim is clear: to provide educators with a comprehensive and up-to-date guide, spanning 144 pages and 6 chapters, on integrating chess into the school curriculum, emphasizing its benefits in the cognitive, social, and emotional development of students. In addition to presenting the basic rules and tips for effective lessons, we offer over 150 chess activity ideas. These interact with core subjects such as Portuguese Language, Mathematics, Sciences, History, Geography, Art, and Physical Education. All are aligned with the skills of the Brazilian BNCC.
We delve deeply into the relationship between chess and the Brazilian National Common Curricular Base (BNCC) and propose innovative strategies for contextualized learning. We believe that teaching chess in schools is a unique opportunity to shape a more aware, reflective, and emotionally balanced generation. And with this guide, we hope to inspire and support educators on this exhilarating journey.
We wish for this book not only to light the path for the practice of chess in schools but also to inspire its incorporation into everyone’s daily lives.
Celebrate this moment with us and join us in promoting chess as a valuable tool for the holistic development of our youth.
Note: This book is in Portuguese, and an English version will be released in mid-2024.
